The term “survivor” is used to represent people who have experienced instances of abuse. The term “victim”, in the context of being a “victim of abuse”, is also applicable. These terms are often interchangeable based on circumstances. For instance, the term “victim” is used when referring to someone who has recently been affected by sexual violence; when discussing a particular crime; or when referring to aspects of the criminal justice system. Other times, the use of “survivor” is to refer to someone who has gone through the recovery process, or when discussing the short- or long-term effects of sexual violence.
